I have only personally dealt with very minor instances of mental health issues, though I do have a number of friends and family members that have various manifestations of phobias, generalized anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and bi-polar disorder. My own personal experience was brought on by a period of a lot of stress as an undergraduate, when I dealt with insomnia, long bouts of crying, feeling numb, and anxiety. I was fortunate enough to have people in my life that I felt comfortable talking to and I received a lot of great advice.
No one should feel like they are completely alone in their struggle.
Having open conversations about mental health is so important because each experience is different and unique, yet no one should feel like they are completely alone in their struggle. There are so many excellent resources out there to help those in need of therapy, medicine, or other methods to combat mental illness. Having an honest conversation about mental health is the first step to getting better.
